Organic farming worldwide in charts
Here are some good charts from the FiBL Survey 2008 that give a worldwide picture of organic farming. It reminds you in particular that:
-
Although they talk about organic farming a lot, North America only plays a limited role in organic farming (7% of global organic farming), in comparison to Oceania (42%) or Europe (24%)
-
It’s in Europe that countries have the highest share of organic agricultural land (e.g. Liechtenstein 29%, Austria 13%)
-
Australia is from far the country with most organic land (12.3 million hectares), but with only 1% of the world’s organic farms in Oceania, which supposes that organic farms in Australia are massive. Same remark for the USA with 1.6 million hectares and only 2% of the world’s organic farms in North America. In comparison, Africa has 0.4 million hectares of organic land but 24 % of the world’s organic farms.
